Iowa DNR says pond issues last year could arise again

DES MOINES, Iowa - In maintaining a healthy pond ecosystem, balancing aquatic plant growth is crucial. While these plants are essential, excessive growth can restrict pond use and disrupt fish populations.

If you faced pond-related challenges last year due to overgrown aquatic plants, you might encounter similar issues this year. For existing ponds, mechanical and chemical control methods offer immediate solutions.

However, they are most effective when initiated early, before plant growth reaches its peak. Delaying action until growth becomes dense can complicate control efforts and may lead to water quality issues harmful to fish.

Mechanical methods like bottom blanketing, shading, and manual removal can help manage plant growth. Bottom blanketing involves covering the pond bottom with materials like weed barriers or black plastic to limit plant growth.

Shading with pond dye reduces light penetration, inhibiting plant growth. For more guidance on managing aquatic plants in ponds, visit iowadnr.gov/ponds.
