JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - In Missouri, the battle against chronic wasting disease continues as the Missouri Department of Conservation reveals the results of its extensive surveillance efforts.
Between July 2023 and April 2024, MDC sampled and tested over 37,000 deer, with a staggering 162 testing positive for CWD. This brings the total number of CWD cases in the state to 572 since its first confirmation in 2012.
MDC's surveillance included mandatory sampling during the November firearms deer season and voluntary efforts in partnership with taxidermists, meat processors, and freezer head-drop locations.
Additionally, targeted removal efforts were employed post-season, resulting in the removal of 51 CWD-positive deer. For more information on CWD and how to get involved, visit mdc.mo.gov.
