DES MOINES, Iowa - As summer approaches, Iowa state parks and forest staff are gearing up for the camping season with various preparations underway.

From turning on water to sprucing up campgrounds and facilities, the aim is to ensure a pleasant experience for the anticipated influx of visitors.

Last year, Iowa's state parks welcomed over 864,000 campers and nearly 14 million visitor days, indicating the popularity of these outdoor destinations.

And with new improvements and renovations in store, visitors can expect some exciting changes.

Pikes Peak and Lake Ahquabi state parks, two of Iowa’s most beloved campgrounds, have undergone extensive renovations, including electrical upgrades and pull-through driveways.

Additionally, both parks now offer 100% reservable sites, enhancing convenience for campers.

Several other state parks are also seeing improvements, such as new boat ramps, reconstructed trails, and renovated amenities like fishing piers and shower buildings.
