DES MOINES, Iowa - It's National Air Quality Awareness Week and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources has six tips to help you enjoy the outdoors while safeguarding air quality.
Firstly, opt for sustainable fires when camping or using fire pits. Secondly, reduce emissions from vehicles by keeping engines properly tuned, minimizing idling time, and refueling during cooler hours.
Thirdly, consider switching to electric or hand-powered lawn equipment to minimize pollution from gas-powered engines.
Fourthly, opt for safe alternatives for household cleaners and paints to avoid releasing toxic chemicals into the air.
Fifthly, improve indoor air quality by adopting air-purifying plants like spider plants and peace lilies, which help remove pollutants and replenish oxygen levels.
Lastly, check air quality forecasts before outdoor activities, especially for vulnerable groups like those with lung conditions, children, and the elderly. Stay informed about air quality conditions to minimize exposure to pollutants.
