MDA and USDA continuing to monitor H5N1

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - In a bid to safeguard the U.S. livestock industry against the looming threat of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza, the USDA has rolled out a series of preemptive measures aimed at containing and mitigating its spread.

The Missouri Department of Agriculture says that the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has implemented a Federal Order mandating the following actions: Firstly, dairy cattle intended for interstate movement must undergo mandatory testing for Influenza A virus at approved National Animal Health Laboratory Network facilities.

Owners of herds with positive test results must furnish data, including tracing of animal movements. Compliance with specified conditions is mandatory for interstate travel.

Additionally, laboratories and state veterinarians are obligated to report positive Influenza A detection and diagnostic results in livestock to the USDA. For comprehensive details, visit the USDA's website.
