JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - A 35-year tradition is no more in Missouri. Established in 1987, Adopt-a-Highway enabled individuals and organization to sponsor highway sections, but now, they must bid adieu.
In its place, the Missouri Department of Transportation has introduced "Keeping Missouri Beautiful," a volunteer litter pick-up initiative.
The decision was discussed publicly at the April 3 Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission meeting. It stemmed from a detailed review of Adopt a Highway, citing costs and safety risks outweighing benefits.
MoDOT assures adoption groups of the transition, with those under three-year agreements continuing until expiration, no later than 2026.
