JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Missouri Department of Transportation urges drivers to exercise caution and patience, especially through work zones.
Missouri has nearly 800 work zones daily across its 34,000 miles of state roadways. In 2023, there were 4,563 work zone crashes, resulting in 36 fatalities.
Impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding, and not wearing seat belts are major concerns during the increased Memorial Day weekend traffic.
Last year, 14 people were killed and 60 seriously injured over the holiday weekend. Alarmingly, 70% of 2024's road fatalities in Missouri involved individuals not wearing seat belts.
Drivers can check road conditions, delays, and work zones at traveler.modot.org, available as a free mobile app.
This summer, drivers should be aware of the concrete replacement on Route 36 in Livingston County, narrowing traffic to one lane in both directions.
