St. Joseph to recognize National Fentanyl Awareness Day

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - One city in the KXCV/KRNW listening area will be hosting a big event for National Fentanyl Awareness Day next Tuesday.

The City of St. Joseph Health Department is teaming up with the Buchanan County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention coalition for the event in the Felix Street Square at 5:30 p.m.

The occasion will spotlight budding talent from our region's young musicians, offering a platform to showcase their skills. This event aims to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs, particularly fentanyl, prevalent in St. Joseph.

The focus is on reaching out to middle school through college-age youth and parents to educate them about this pressing public health crisis.

Last year's statistics paint a grim picture, with over 70,000 Americans succumbing to fatal overdoses linked to illegally made fentanyl.

Often disguised in fake pills and street drugs, fentanyl poses a severe risk, catching users unaware of its potency.

National statistics from the CDC reveal that fentanyl-related deaths among Americans under 50 surpass those from heart disease, cancer, and accidents combined.
