DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach are launching the Chronic Wasting Disease Ambassadors program.
This education initiative aims to help Iowans tackle chronic wasting disease in deer. Hunters, landowners, and conservationists are invited to attend a course on June 11, 18, and 25 at the Rathbun Fish Hatchery.
Participants will learn best practices for preventing the disease's spread, how to collect tissue samples for testing, and how to educate their communities.
The program seeks to create a network of local leaders to effectively communicate about managing and mitigating chronic wasting disease.
The course features three in-person meetings and two online lessons, covering disease ecology, sampling, and communication strategies.
Participants will also network with area wildlife biologists and receive resources to promote effective disease management. Chronic wasting disease is fatal to deer and has been found in 23 Iowa counties.
