CHILLICOTHE, Mo. - Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox has announced his immediate retirement, effective September 1, due to medical leave.

Originally planning to retire at the end of the year, Cox will now close out his office early. He has appointed Dustin Woelfle to take charge of the sheriff’s office.

Cox expressed confidence in Woelfle, who is the only candidate for sheriff in the upcoming elections, and expects him to officially start as sheriff on September 1. Cox praised his team, highlighting their dedication to the community.

He submitted his resignation to Livingston County Clerk Sherry Parks, who will inform the governor. Cox has served as sheriff for 24 years, following his earlier roles as a deputy and police officer in Chillicothe.
