Iowa DNR gearing up for upcoming dove hunting season

DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa’s dove hunting season kicks off on Sunday, Sept. 1, drawing thousands of hunters to sunflower and wheat fields across the state.

Last year, hunters harvested nearly 195,000 doves, the highest number since the season began in Iowa.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) expects another strong season, with plenty of action for hunters of all skill levels.

Dove hunting is accessible and affordable, requiring just camouflage clothing, a bucket, and plenty of shells.

The DNR recommends preseason scouting to check the condition of sunflower plots, as some fields may have been affected by storms. Officials advise hunters to monitor dove activity in fields a few days before the season.

Dove season runs through Nov. 29, with a daily bag limit of 15 birds and a possession limit of 30. Hunters are reminded to use guns limited to three shells and check for non-toxic shot requirements north of I-80.

All dove hunters must register with the free Harvest Information Program online.
