MU Extension Office offering tips to prevent garden pests

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - With fall approaching, animals are about to start eating more in preparation for winter, which means your garden could become a buffett.

That's why the University of Missouri Extension Office is highlighting the importance of managing wildlife such as deer, groundhogs, and squirrels.

They recommend using integrated pest management strategies to control wildlife. This includes planting resistant species that wildlife typically avoid, such as marigolds, geraniums, and sunflowers.

Noise devices like scare cannons and pyrotechnics can temporarily repel animals, but they may become less effective as wildlife acclimates.

Visual deterrents such as scarecrows and mirrors should be relocated regularly to maintain their effectiveness.

Chemical repellents, including homemade mixtures of eggs and water, can also be useful but need reapplication and vary in effectiveness depending on animal hunger. Fencing is one of the most effective methods.
