COLUMBUS, Neb. - The Nebraska Public Power District has advanced to Phase 2 of a feasibility study exploring potential sites for advanced nuclear reactors in the state.

Funded by a $1 million allocation from the Nebraska Legislature, the study aims to identify suitable locations for Small Modular Reactors, an emerging nuclear technology known for its flexibility and safety.

Sixteen sites near cities like Brownville, Grand Island, and Fremont have been selected for further evaluation. Phase 2 will involve detailed environmental and technical assessments, as well as community engagement.

The study will ultimately narrow the list to two to four final sites.

NPPD CEO Tom Kent emphasized in a press release the importance of nuclear energy in Nebraska's power supply, noting its 50-year history of safe and reliable operation in the state.

Local support will play a crucial role in determining the final site selection. For more details, visit nextgennuclearne.com.
