DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa hunters will play a key role in monitoring chronic wasting disease during the upcoming deer gun seasons.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) aims to collect 5,000 tissue samples statewide, with higher quotas in areas near confirmed cases.
Hunters can participate by contacting local wildlife staff or using the hunter submission pathway on the DNR’s website.
For a fee, hunters can submit their own samples, with quick results processed at Iowa State University’s Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. Videos and resources are available online to guide the process.
CWD, which affects deer through direct contact and contaminated environments, has been found in 25 Iowa counties and all neighboring states.
To reduce its spread, hunters are urged to avoid concentrating deer with feed or minerals and to limit carcass transportation outside the harvest county. For more details, visit iowadnr.gov/cwd.
