JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) extends its thanks to thousands of hunters who participated in mandatory sampling for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) during the November firearms deer season opening weekend.

Over 18,500 deer were sampled in 43 counties on November 16 and 17. CWD sampling involves removing lymph nodes from harvested deer for testing at an independent lab.

Since CWD was first detected in Missouri in 2012, MDC has collected nearly 300,000 samples, identifying 582 confirmed cases. Hunters can access free voluntary CWD testing at select locations or use self-service drop-off sites.

Test results are typically available online within four weeks. CWD, which is 100 percent fatal to deer, poses a significant threat to Missouri’s deer population, hunting culture, and economy. Learn more at mdc.mo.gov/cwd.
