WATSON, Mo. - We're learning more about a deadly wrong-way crash that happened over this past weekend. Two Kearney High School students and a Nebraska man were killed in the crash Sunday morning on I-29 near Watson.
A third Kearney student was seriously injured. The crash occurred around 7-20 A-M following a police pursuit that started in Iowa.
The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office began the chase after a domestic assault report involving the Nebraska man, who fled with a one-year-old child in a 2023 Kia Sorento.
Authorities say the suspect drove southbound in the northbound lanes of I-29, crossing into Missouri.
The Sorento collided with a Ford Focus carrying the three teens, causing a chain reaction involving a semi-truck and a patrol vehicle.
Two teens in the Focus were pronounced dead at the scene, and the third was flown to a Nebraska hospital.
The 29-year-old suspect also died, while the 1-year-old child was rescued from the burning Sorento and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The semi-driver was unharmed, and the deputy involved was treated and released.
