BETHANY, Mo. - When sending their kids to school, many parents rely on the school districts to provide both balanced and nutritional meals for them.
But did you know that every year, schools in Missouri are selected to review operations for a food service audit?
Dr. Michael Estes, superintendent of the South Harrison R-II School District, says their district has been selected this year. There are many aspects to the food service audit.
The state must review menus for both breakfast and lunch, making sure that each meal is balanced with the correct food groups.
The state also reviews the district on their purchasing process, as well as how cafeteria assistants handle and prep food, making sure they are following state laws and regulations.
According to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, there were over 50 million lunches served in the 2023-24 public school year.
