DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is encouraging taxpayers to donate to the Fish and Wildlife Fund, also known as the "Chickadee Check-off," on their state tax forms.
Last year, just over 5,300 Iowans contributed nearly $134,000—a number that has declined by 50% over the last 20 years.
The DNR says the fund is vital for non-game wildlife conservation, supporting over 1,000 species like songbirds, monarch butterflies, turtles, and bald eagles.
These donations help fund habitat restoration, research, and education initiatives. In 2024, the program's projects included tagging Wood Thrush to study migration and rediscovering a fish not seen in Iowa since the 1930s.
To donate, taxpayers can simply write an amount on line 21 of Iowa’s Form 1040. Donations can also be made online at the Iowa DNR website.
