JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Agriculture has suspended all poultry and waterfowl auctions, shows, and swap meets in counties with avian influenza control areas or surveillance zones.
The suspension currently affects Newton, Jasper, McDonald, and Lawrence counties, where federal officials have confirmed cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in commercial poultry flocks.
HPAI is a highly contagious and deadly viral disease for domesticated poultry, with cases confirmed in all 50 states since 2022. Poultry events are still allowed in unaffected counties under strict biosecurity protocols.
Producers are urged to prevent contact between their birds and wild birds and to report sick or dead birds to the state veterinarian at (573) 751-3377.
