JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri’s economy surged in the third quarter of 2024, with the state’s GDP growing at an annualized rate of 3.8%, surpassing the national average of 3.1%.
This strong performance ranked Missouri 16th in the nation, as the state’s economy reached $455 billion, solidifying its position as the 22nd largest in the U.S.
Key sectors driving this growth included retail trade, which accounted for 33% of the state’s annual growth, along with health care and professional services, which contributed 13%, outperforming national averages.
Urban and rural areas showed mixed results. Urban counties grew 2.6% in 2023, matching U.S. metro trends, with significant growth in health care and tourism.
Meanwhile, rural counties expanded by 2.8%, outperforming urban areas but trailing the national rural average. Non-metro tourism surged 5.7%, and agriculture GDP rose 9.7%, far exceeding the U.S. rural average.
