Paddlefish snagging season around the corner

DES MOINES, Iowa - The paddlefish snagging season on the Missouri and Big Sioux rivers opens February 1 and runs through April 30, with fishing allowed from sunrise to sunset each day.

Anglers must have a valid Iowa fishing license, a special paddlefish license, and unused transportation tags to participate.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) encourages anglers to track their fishing efforts and complete an electronic survey at the end of the season, regardless of whether they catch a paddlefish.

This data will help the DNR evaluate the season and guide potential regulation changes. If you catch a jaw-tagged paddlefish, report the tag number, date, location, and length by calling the number on the tag.

Tagging helps fisheries agencies monitor paddlefish populations, growth, and movements. Anglers should note that low river levels might affect access to Missouri River boat ramps.

For more information on regulations and the season, visit the Iowa DNR website.
