Feb. 14, 2019Coaches Show
This week's Valentine's Day edition of the Bearcat Coaches Show was Thursday at Carson's Sports Grille in downtown Maryville. John Coffey and Matt Tritten talked about Northwest sports and featured basketball and tennis. The guests for the evening were women's basketball coach Austin Meyer, sophomore guard Kylie Coleman, men's basketball coach Ben McCollum, junior forward Ryan Welty, and tennis coach Mark Rosewell.
Both Northwest Missouri State University basketball teams faced Central Missouri on Wednesday night in Bearcat Arena.
Coach Meyer talked about the women's team and how they fought to claw their way back from being down by 15 points early in the first quarter, and got within three points of the Jennies in the fourth. However, the Bearcats lost to Central Missouri 78-67. Coleman hit the three pointer to bring the game within striking distance at 62-59 with 7:44 left in the game. Unfortunately, that was not enough to give the Bearcats the win they needed. Kendey Eaton scored a career high 37 points, which is tied for third in Northwest history for points in a game. Mallory McConkey added 10.
The men's team earned a win over the Mules. McCollum and Welty talked about how they had to overcome a halftime deficit for just the second time this season. In the end, the Bearcats scored a 67-50 win. Welty drained five three-pointers in seven attempts to score 15 points and Joey Witthus scored a total of 19 points.
John Coffey spoke with tennis coach Mark Rosewell on the program. The season begins February 22nd with the tennis teams facing Maryville University at 2:00 p.m. in Red Oak, Iowa.
Tune in to KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9 Saturday for another basketball doubleheader at Bearcat Arena. The Bearcats face Southwest Baptist at 1:30 for the women's game, 3:30 for the men's game. Pregame starts at 1:10 on 90.5, 88.9 or at kxcv.org.
