Northwest Missouri State delivered the first loss of the season for Pittsburg State in a dominant 31-7 at Carnie Smith Stadium.
The Bearcats (5-1) forced a three-and-out on the Gorillas' (5-1) opening drive of the game, then marched down the field and punched in a touchdown on a one-yard run by Isaiah Strayhorn. Northwest never looked back from there.
Pitt State's first score of the afternoon didn't come until there were just 48 seconds remaining in the football game, and the outcome was well in-hand.
Ranked second in the MIAA in rushing offense with more than 240 yards per game, the Gorillas were limited to just 118 yards on the ground against the Bearcats – their lowest output of the season.
Ahead 7-0 entering the second quarter, Northwest pulled away from Pitt prior to halftime.
Braden Wright hit Chase White for his third touchdown reception of the season to open a 14-0 lead. LaTroy Harper hauled in his first career touchdown pass from Wright to open a three-score lead, and Alec Tatum scampered into the end zone from 23 yards out on a fake field goal to put the Bearcats up 28-0 at halftime.
Wright through for 211 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 15-31 passing.
Strayhorn rushed for a season-high 147 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.
Now after back to back wins, Northwest returns to Bearcat Stadium to face Nebraska Kearney on Homecoming.
Kickoff is set for 2pm. Bearcat Gameday presented by Impact Interiors will begin at 1pm on KXCV 90.5 & KRNW 88.9.
