For the 29th time in program history, Northwest Missouri State football won the MIAA championship Saturday afternoon in Warrensburg.
The Bearcats (9-2) downed the Mules (5-6) 48-21 behind an impressive running game and a stout defense.
Central Missouri, the MIAA leader in total offense at 466 yards per game, was limited to 187 total yards in the regular season finale. Northwest stifled the Mules' prolific passing attack to just 141 yards, their fewest output through the air since 2014.
The 'Cats also forced three turnovers in the game.
When the Bearcats had the ball, it was a steady dose of Josh Caldwell and Isaiah Strayhorn.
Caldwell, the senior from Lee's Summit, gained 182 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries. Strayhorn added 81 yards on 21 carries. Both players are within 20 yards of reaching the 700 yard plateau for the season.
Northwest now moves on to the NCAA Division II Playoffs to face Grand Valley State in the first round in Allendale, MI. The time for the game is still TBA. The game will be broadcast on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9.
