The chase for perfection continued Tuesday night as Northwest Missouri State weathered a storm from Missouri Western in the second half, and beat the Griffons 70-68 in the final home regular season game of 2019.
The Bearcats (28-0, 18-0 MIAA) led the Griffons 60-44 with just over five minutes remaining, but the road team had one more charge left in them.
Missouri Western outscored Northwest 22-7, including a four-point play from Lavon Hightower. The MWSU senior was fouled while hitting a three-pointer with 29 seconds remaining. His made free throw brought the Griffons within one point of the Bearcats.
Kirk Finley and Ryan Welty combined to make three free throws down the stretch to lift Northwest to the win.
Joey Witthus scored 21 of his game-high 29 points in the second half, and Diego Bernard recorded his first career double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Northwest will complete the regular season Thursday evening at Washburn. Pregame on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9 starts at 7:10pm, followed by the opening tip at 7:30pm.
