Northwest fought through an early 8-0 deficit to decisively beat Missouri Southern 82-62 Saturday afternoon.
The Bearcats (21-0, 11-0 MIAA) now stand as the only unbeaten team in all of NCAA basketball after a loss for No. 1 Bellarmine.
Southern had won three straight regular season meetings against Northwest, and started quickly again Saturday knocking down their first three shots of the day to open an eight point. The 'Cats responded with an 11-2 run to take the lead.
The two teams battled back and forth throughout the first half until Diego Bernard made a pair of free throws to put Northwest in front 27-26. The lead only grew from there.
The Bearcats led the Lions 35-31 at halftime. Northwest shot 63-percent from the field in the second half and outscored Southern 47-31 in the final 20 minutes to pull away.
Joey Witthus posted his first double-double of the season with 28 points and 10 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes.
Trevor Hudgins scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half for the 'Cats, and Diego Bernard finished with 16 points hitting 6-6 free throws.
Northwest now goes on the road for a pair of games Thursday and Saturday in St. Charles and Jefferson City, respectively. Thursday's game against Lincoln tips off at 7:30pm with pregame on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9 starting at 7:10pm.
