Northwest Missouri State men's basketball won its fourth straight MIAA Tournament Championship Sunday afternoon with an 82-53 victory over Washburn at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
The Bearcats are the first team in MIAA history to win four consecutive conference tournament titles.
At 32-0, Northwest is also off to its best start in program history passing the 1929-30 Bearcats that went 31-0 under head coach Henry Iba.
Ahead by three with 7:15 remaining in the first half, Northwest went on a 15-2 run to open a 16-point lead over Washburn, and held a 39-25 advantage at halftime.
The Bearcats led by as many as 34 points in the second half on the way to their third win over the Ichabods this season.
Trevor Hudgins led Northwest with 27 points, eight assists and no turnovers in the victory.
Joey Witthus finished with 25 points and seven rebounds. Diego Bernard added eight points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Witthus was named MIAA Tournament MVP, and was joined by Hudgins on the all-tournament team.
The Bearcats now advance to the NCAA Tournament. Northwest is the No. 1 seed in the central region and will meet No. 8 Minnesota State Saturday at 6pm inside Bearcat Arena. Pregame on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9 will begin at 5:40pm.
