Northwest Missouri State took the lead on Washburn with 4:15 left in regulation, but the Ichabods marched down the field and punched in the game-winning score in the final minute to secure a 17-16 win over the Bearcats.
Northwest (5-1) trailed 3-0 at halftime, and didn't find get on the scoreboard until a touchdown pass to Kaden Davis from Mike Hohensee spotted the visitors a 7-3 lead with 5:08 left in the third quarter.
Washburn (5-2) found the end zone for the first time four minutes later to take a 10-7 lead to the fourth.
The defenses reigned for the first 10 minutes of the final period until a J'Ravien Anderson interception spotted the Bearcats great field position. A steady dose of Al McKeller allowed the 'Cats to drive 37 yards in eight plays, capped by a one-yard McKeller touchdown run.
Northwest was one stop away from earning a sixth straight victory to open the season.
Washburn had other ideas. Redshirt freshman Kellen Simoncic, in the first extended playing time of his career, took the Ichabods 96 yards in 11 plays for the go-ahead touchdown on a screen pass to Taylon Peters.
Simoncic also took a safety with five seconds remaining to eat up more clock and cut the Northwest deficit to one point. The Bearcats' desperation play as the clock ran out was cut down after a pair of laterals.
Hohensee finished the day with 252 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions on 22-32 passing.
McKeller rushed for 138 yards and a score, his fourth game of 100-plus rushing yards this season.
Northwest faces Northeastern State at 1pm Saturday in Tahlequah, OK. Pregame on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9 begins at noon.
