Northwest Missouri State pushed No. 2 Fort Hays State to the brink, but fell short in a 63-60 loss Wednesday night in Hays, KS.
The Bearcats (11-3, 6-2 MIAA) trailed by 13 points twice, but battled back to tie it 54-54 with less than five minutes remaining.
The Tigers jumped back ahead 60-55, but a quick 5-1 Northwest run had the 'Cats down 61-60 with 22 seconds to play. Fort Hays held strong with two more defensive stops to earn the win.
Molly Hartnett led Northwest with 14 points and three assists.
Jillian Fleming put up 13 points and four rebounds.
Kelsey Fields added a career-high eight points and 11 rebounds.
Northwest is back home Saturday to face No. 16 Nebraska Kearney at 1:30pm. Pregame on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9 begins at 1pm.
