Freshman guard Peyton Kelderman hit a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to boost Northwest Missouri State's lead to three points, and the Bearcats held on to be at Winona State 65-52 in Topeka, KS.
Playing in the Washburn Thanksgiving Classic, Northwest (4-1) opened up a 16-point second half lead, but the Warriors battled back to cut the deficit to just one point twice. The first time came with 4:28 to play in the fourth quarter. Kelderman promptly answered with a three-pointer to extend the advantage back to four.
The second time Winona climbed within one of Northwest, the Urbandale, IA native hit to free throws that proved to be enough to hold on for the win.
Kelderman led Northwest with a career-high 16 points. Mallory McConkey added 14, followed by Paityn Rau with 12.
The Bearcats return home to open conference play December 2 against Northeastern State. Tip-off is slated for 5:30. Pregame on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9 begins at 5pm.
